That’s the number Trump dropped on Friday. A deal with Venezuela putting the United States in control of sixty-five billion barrels of oil reserves, seventeen fields worth, at a moment when gas is sitting at $4.09 a gallon national average. A year ago it was $3.21. The strategic petroleum reserve has fallen below 300 million barrels, down more than 100 million since January. The Iran war just hit six months old with no end in sight.

I wrote that piece back in April. Tankers rerouting. Venezuela being reset. Iran being squeezed. I asked you then whether what we were watching was reaction or design.
It became my most read piece ever, more than anything I’ve published, including the one Trump himself shared last year.
Now it’s August. Maduro has been in U.S. custody since January, facing narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges. And on Friday, the oil showed up.
I’m not going to pretend I called the exact figure. I didn’t. Nobody could have. But I told you months ago to stop watching the headlines and start watching the map, the routes, the resets, the pieces moving before anyone announced a plan. This is what that looks like when it lands.
Here’s what I will say plainly. There is more to this. A lot more. I’ve been sitting with a bigger piece on where Maduro, the midterms, and the last six years of election integrity fights all connect, and it’s coming, I promise. This oil deal isn’t the end of that thread. It might just be the first domino anyone can see.

Americans it seems want to feel good about their nations activities towards others, bringing democracy or other abject bullshit. Why the American people have to have smoke continually blown up their collective asses by the politicians to hide the theft of other people's national resources. As long as the price for fuel comes down they can believe this theft was all about stopping illicit drugs from reaching US borders....LOL. What really went down? Chevron and Exxon said "Hey Congress, Senate and Executive get us some Venezuelan oil." Then the military for hire was deployed, socializing the debt and privatizing the profits, and so long as fuel prices come down Americans will hold onto the false narrative and feel good about their nation and not the F**KING-over of the Venezuelans. Remember that what empire enforces on others it will eventually enforce on its home population.
