Europe, the Free Ride Is Over
European bloggers are in full meltdown mode.
The Trump–EU trade deal just dropped, and the wailing is deafening.
“Unfair.”
“Coercive.”
“A slap in the face.”
And my personal favorite:
“Again, this is Europe's century of humiliation.”
No. It’s just the first time in 75 years someone handed Europe the bill.
Let’s break it down.
The U.S. slapped a 15% tariff on most EU exports: autos, semiconductors, pharma.
Steel and aluminum stay at 50% until Europe hits new quotas.
In return?
The EU agreed to buy:
$750 billion in American energy
$600 billion in U.S. infrastructure, tech, and defense equipment
That’s what they’re calling “brutal.”
Translation: They’re used to taking without giving.
France is throwing a tantrum. Germany’s sweating through a PR smile.
And the bloggers? Absolutely hysterical.
You’d think Trump just burned NATO to the ground.
What actually happened is far simpler:
The U.S. stopped pretending this was a two-way street.
Let’s talk about that so-called alliance.
The U.S. defended Europe during the Cold War.
Bankrolled NATO. Propped up entire governments.
Subsidized their security while they slashed defense budgets and built welfare states.
We kept shipping them gas, intel, and protection.
They kept telling themselves they were “equal partners.”
Now Trump says, "Pay your fair share."
And suddenly it’s a crisis?
No. It’s reality finally catching up.
If Europe wants American security, American markets, American tech, then it needs to start acting like it’s part of the solution, not just a customer demanding VIP service without paying the bill.
Let’s be honest.
Europe talks a big game about “strategic autonomy.”
But the minute things get hot, they run back to Washington, DC with their hands out.
They’ve had 75 years to build independence.
Instead, they’ve built press releases.
This deal didn’t break the alliance.
It clarified it.
Europe has been playing dress-up as a global power while the U.S. handled the grown-up responsibilities.
Trump didn’t wreck the relationship.
He just stopped cosigning the delusion.
No more blank checks. No more free rides.
It’s not cruelty. It’s correction.
And frankly, it’s long overdue.
